That’s right kids, I’m going to be back in Ann Arbor for a weekend as I travel from Orlando back to Denver. I get in sometime Friday night 5/16/2008 and leave Monday 5/19/2008. The really important thing to note is that on 5/17/2008 I will be drinking a lot of Oberon at Ashley’s starting sometime in the evening and going till the wee hours of the morning. I hope you can join me!
These are the things I think about…
Published April 9th, 2008 in life, technology and work. 2 CommentsWhatever I am doing, I am thinking about something else. The exceptions to this rule are activities involving gravity and/or lots of speed and therefore an increased risk to my health. Hearing the wind racing past tends to clear the mind… Generally my thoughts revolve around trying to solve a problem, or answer a question, perhaps expand a theory. Sometimes these are work related, but more often they are broader topics. Currently there is a lot of news of the doom and gloom sort surrounding the
Assumptions:
1. The credit crisis will get worse, foreclosures will continue to rise, the housing market is critically oversupplied and will not correct itself without far reaching repercussions.
2. The US dollar is weak and will continue to fall, the Asian markets that own a lot of the
3. We are going to experience a major recession and rebalancing of US consumption and economic values in the next 10 years.
Questions:
1. What new product or services could be started now which would be valuable during an impending recession?
2. How can you use current trends in technology or web development to solve problems that will be faced by individuals and families during financial crisis?
3. What is the best way to position yourself for success during a
Ideas:
1. Buy property.
a. Land ownership has been the basis for economies and social structures since mankind stopped being hunter-gatherers and started raising crops. Leasing or renting houses/land to laborers would provide a steady and fairly stable source of income so long as you own the property outright. Using loans to finance property purchases increases the risk, but could be sustainable so long as the loan payments were suitably lower than the market rate for leasing the property to allow for market adjustments in demand.
b. Unplug from the economic system by starting a self sustaining farm. Ownership of the land is critical as it would allow for growth to be determined by your needs and not the needs of the customer. Some export of goods could potentially be sustained to local consumers as long as the sustainability of the farm was not diminished.
2. Web services portal for tools, forms, FAQs, and services required by people when in financial trouble. While these sites exist there is a lot of room for improvement and ways to add value left in the market. (I haven’t really been able to wrap my head around what would work best in the web/tech space)
3. Move to
4. Move your assets and investments into foreign currencies and stocks. Ok, so actually picking up and moving might be too much for most people, but there is going to be a lot of opportunity for financial growth that your money could take advantage of even if you aren’t there.
Right now my thoughts are exploring how to employ web/tech to solve problems created by a recession, or provide services to those in need. There is a train of though which involves providing human services to people needing financial advice, relocation, employment, or training to acquire the needed skills for future employment. These services might be more assistance in using web/tech tools, but might also involve some development to simplify the user experience in an effort to deliver the tool/service directly. The financials of this type of business venture are harder for me to visualize, and might border on being supported by federal programs, something I really don’t understand from a process standpoint and fundamentally disagree with in the abstract.
Anyway… just thought I’d share…
Web 0.0 – 1.0 Connectivity
Oh who cares about AOL and their fucking CDs that plague my mailbox. Internet? What’s that? People pay to get access to email… ok I get that… they pay to go to websites? What’s a website and how do I get one? More over how do I get people to my website and sell them stuff? If you have a brick and mortar store you should have an e store. Sure people will buy your crap… no I can’t prove that… Your users don’t like your website? They should get broadband. Who has broadband?… the 16-30 demographic? Quick, everyone spend a lot of money to build a bunch of crap for this interweb thing, no your product doesn’t have to exist, just go public already.
Web 1.0 – 2.0 Google and the others
The bubble burst, no one is making money on that intranet hype anymore, no I don’t need another search engine, and Yahoo finds what I need. That page doesn’t even have any ads or hundreds of links jamming up the interface, they will never make any money. Economies of scale? Sure I’ve heard of it but what’s it got to do with internet/web companies? Whadaya mean you can start a small grassroots company, put up a webpage, sell a product, and prove your business strategy… that’s just crazy talk.
Web 2.0 – 2.x Participation
Users just want to consume, the internet is a pipeline for email communication , the sale of goods and services, and the distribution of information… preferably all while we push ads into your inbox and target you with banners. If people want to share photos they should just email them… Bob I think you misspelled something when you wrote that memo about Flickr. Did you just call me a tube? My space?… I have an office, what the hell are you talking about? You did a podcast? Did it hurt? I keep hearing about this whole blog thing. Facewhat, book? Only for college kids? Oh, but now everyone can join? Beacon, does that taste like bacon? Wait… is the target demo supplying their demographic information willingly? Could they make our job easier? That Apple company made a phone? Didn’t they learn their lesson with
Web 3.0 My Theory
So I can carry this little device around in my pocket and make phone calls, listen to music, SMS, IM, Tweet, watch video, record video, take pictures, look at my pictures, ship said video and pictures around, surf the web, and use everything that mobile versions of websites can supply? What do you mean that’s not all? Sure I plugged all of my contact and interest information into the opensource social app. You mean my portable device now has that on it too? And it can tell if there are other devices in the area with similar profile attributes? I just walked by a restaurant where a good friend of mine had lunch and loved it? Guess I should try it. There is a baseball game on in the bar I just passed by, my team is playing, and there are 15 other fans already cheering them on inside? What if I don’t want people to know all that about me? I can turn it off you say? I can limit the disclosure level based on defined social association? Someone just posted a photo live from the game that’s on. That’s awesome!
So its a photo that I’ve been meaning to post for a while… Yes I scored a 184… And yes I got beat by a 207…
Ok all you non google users, I don’t know how you survive this digital life without all the tools google gives us but I’m making it a little easier to see what I’m up to (and more importantly where I am ). There is a new link next to the about section called Travel Calendar, it’s a bit more than that, as it also shows some of my personal stuff… but you get the drift. I keep it fairly current and use it almost exclusively to manage my whereabouts for work. If you don’t see a travel entry you can assume that I’m in Denver, but not nessisarily without plans for the day (come on, I don’t do everything with google calendars!).
I'm only curious… who are you? There is a longer more in depth question at play here, like should I even know who reads my blog? Is outing a reader via analytics the fair thing to do? Most likely it's someone I know, but I can't think of who I know that travels to New York and wouldn't remember that my site is schwendigity and would then search for my name in quotes… But the real kicker is that a search for "Tyler Technologies" was also ran that same day with a hit to my site, and then both my name and Tyler Techs without quotes… and all from New York… So fess up before I turn my search dogs loose… Someone also dropped in from Apache Junction while I was in AZ… but I'm pretty sure it was a friend of mine who had just gotten a lesson from me in the ways of google reader… did you subscribe to my site John?
